How Do We Register Our Intent to Marry in Ireland?
To legally marry in Ireland, couples must register their Intent to Marry with the HSE at least 3 months before their wedding date. This applies to all ceremonies — including religious, secular and celebrant-led legal weddings.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Book Your Marriage Notification Appointment
As soon as you have your wedding date and celebrant confirmed, book your appointment with the HSE Civil Registration Service. Waiting times can vary, so it’s best to book as early as possible — ideally 6–12 months before your wedding.
Attend the Appointment Together
Both partners must attend the appointment in person. At the meeting, you’ll provide your documents, confirm your ceremony details and sign a declaration stating there is no legal reason the marriage cannot take place.
Receive Your Marriage Registration Form (MRF)
If everything is in order, you’ll receive your Marriage Registration Form (sometimes called the “Green Folder”). This is the legal document your celebrant uses on the day of your ceremony.
Bring Your MRF to Your Ceremony
On your wedding day, I’ll guide you through the legal wording and signing process to ensure your marriage is legally recognised in Ireland.
Helpful Tip: Don’t wait until exactly 3 months before your wedding to start the process — appointment availability can vary throughout the year.
What Documents Must We Bring to Register Our Marriage?
When attending your HSE Marriage Notification Appointment, both partners will need to bring a number of documents to register your Intent to Marry in Ireland.
In most cases, you’ll need:
A valid photo ID (usually a passport)
Your original birth certificate (plus a photocopy)
Proof of address dated within the last 3 months (plus a photocopy)
Your PPS numbers
Details of your ceremony, including:
your wedding date
your venue details
your registered solemniser/celebrant (that’s me!)
the names and dates of birth of your two witnesses (aged 18+)
If either of you has been previously married, widowed, in a civil partnership or divorced, additional documents may be required, such as divorce decrees or death certificates. If any legal documents were issued outside Ireland, it’s best to check directly with the HSE in advance.
My best advice? Book your HSE appointment as early as possible and double-check your paperwork beforehand — it makes the process much smoother and stress-free. I’m always happy to guide couples through what’s needed too.
How Many Wedding Ceremony Enhancements Are Recommended?
There’s no right or wrong answer — it really depends on the style and feel you want for your ceremony.
For most couples, one to three meaningful enhancements tends to work beautifully, adding personal touches without making the ceremony feel too long or overwhelming. A carefully chosen ritual, such as handfasting, a unity candle, ring warming or a wishing stone ceremony, can add beautiful meaning and reflect your relationship in a memorable way.
If you’re planning a shorter, intimate ceremony, one enhancement may feel just right. For larger or more symbolic celebrations, a combination of rituals, personal vows or readings can create a deeply personal experience.
The most important thing is choosing enhancements that feel meaningful to you — not adding things simply for the sake of tradition. Together, we’ll find the right balance to create a ceremony that feels heartfelt, relaxed and completely true to your story.
How Long Should a Wedding Ceremony Be?
There’s no perfect length for a wedding ceremony — it all depends on the experience you want to create.
Most legal wedding ceremonies typically last between 20 and 35 minutes, depending on elements such as personal vows, readings, symbolic rituals or wedding enhancements you choose to include.
For couples wanting something simple and intimate, a shorter ceremony can feel beautifully meaningful. If you’d like to include personal stories, family involvement, handfasting, unity candles or other symbolic touches, your ceremony may naturally be a little longer.
My advice? The best ceremonies feel relaxed, personal and never rushed — long enough to feel meaningful, but short enough to keep everyone fully present and engaged.
Together, we’ll create a ceremony timeline that feels completely right for you and the atmosphere you want for your day.
